Are you planning your first trip to Sedona, Arizona? Get ready for stunning red rock vistas, mystical vortexes, and world-class hiking trails. Whether you’re headed up Cathedral Rock or cruising through Boynton Canyon like I did, having the right gear can make or break your experience.
Here are the top 10 must-pack items for hiking and touring Sedona—plus some bonus tips to help you hit the trails prepared and stress-free.
A lightweight, water-resistant daypack is the backbone of your successful hike! Look for one with a hydration sleeve or side pockets for water bottles. A great daypack will fit snacks, layers, a camera, and sunscreen without weighing you down.
Desert hiking = dry & hot = lots of water. Always ere on the side of caution. It is best to have more than you think you’ll need than not enough! Pack at least 3 liters per day (more in summer), and consider a water purification system like a LifeStraw or tablets if you’ll refill from creeks.
Layering is an old school method that still stand tride and true today! Steer clear of Cotton! Did you know it holds moisture and will not keep you warm when it is wet? Moisture wicking tops and pants or shorts made for hiking will help you to feel comfortable. If you aren’t big on sunscreen, make sure to have a lightweight long sleeve shirt handy. The mornings and evenings is when the temp can be chilly so a fleece or puffer jacket is helpful.
Monsoon season is July – September and can definitely surprise you with afternoon showers. A packable, waterproof jacket will save your hike. To be fair, my fav ponchos are the $2 target ones found in the camping aisle. Very convenient in my opinion and gets the job done!
Don’t underestimate that high desert sun! A hat that has a wide brim, high quality broad spectrum SPF for both skin and lips, and those cute sunnies will make all the difference to beat those powerful rays! Even on cloudy days, UV rays bounce off the red rocks! A moisturizing lip balm will help to keep those lips moisturized!
Breathable hiking shoes or boots with good grip are key to blister free feet! Sedona trails are rocky and uneven and those good soles do matter. Avoid making my mistake by reaching for your trusty gym tennies. Not the same! Also bring moisture wicking socks and a few spare pairs wouldn’t hurt!
Our devices have become such a wonderful way to get us from point A to point B. However, expect cell service to be unreliable and in most cases non existent, so prep with: a printed trail map or offline GPS app (my favorite is AllTrails), a headlamp or flashlight (for late starts or sunset hikes and a small first-aid kit with blister care, painkillers, bandages. If you uise a navigation app, it WILL drain your battery extremely fast. I like to turn my phone into Low Battery Mode in settings. Additionally, I bring 2 extra charged up power sources so I am not caught with a dying lifeline for help.
Not essential for everyone, but can be a huge help on steep climbs or slippery descents—especially Cathedral Rock, Soldier Pass, and Devil’s Bridge.
Snacks are our friends. Carbs are our best friends. Hiking burns lots of calories, so pack energizing snacks like: Protein bars, trail mix, dried fruit, peanut butter crackers and jerky. This is another area where it’s a good idea to bring more than you think you will want. You will get surprisingly energy-zapped and that little boost of energy helps alot. Aim for 200–300 calories per hour of hiking.
The great outdoors and in this case, Sedona is jaw-droppingly photogenic. God in his amazing grace created a stunning backdrop for us to admire, did He not? Bring you device with extra storage, a portable charger and an extra battery if using a camera. You will be so glad you have proof of those views!
With these essentials in your pack, now you are ready to enjoy the magic of Sedona! It is a stunning place on God’s Earth you will never forget!
