7 Reasons to Choose the Mountains Over the Beach for Your Next Summer Vacation

Maybe It’s Time for a Change

The summer beach vacation has been my family’s go-to for years. The sunshine, ocean air, and relaxed, barefoot energy. It’s hard to beat for a beach loyalist!

This year, I decided to swap the shoreline for a mountain escape. Colorado opened my eyes to a different type of summer getaway. It was peaceful, adventurous, refreshing, and maybe even a little bit life-changing.

If you are a loyal beach lover, this is your gentle nudge to try something new! Here are 7 reasons why your next vacation should take you to the mountains.

  1. A Different Kind of Majesty

The beach showcases God’s beauty in glittering aqua color, vast horizons and rolling tides. The mountains though? They lift your eyes up. Up to the towering peaks, alpine meadows, trickling waterfalls—it’s like stepping into a living psalm. The peace up there feels sacred. If you’ve ever felt close to God with your toes in the sand, imagine how you’ll feel on a mountaintop, breathless in more ways than one.

  1. Fresher, Cleaner, and Calmer

Breathing in that crisp and cool high-altitude air, even in the summer with no humidity or sand clinging to everything is just the relaxation anyone needs. Fresh pine, open skies, and a slower rhythm that naturally helps you exhale. There is a depth to the wilderness that invites reflection, wonder and true stillness.

  1. Adventure with Altitude

Mountains offer everything from adrenaline-pumping hikes and whitewater rafting to quiet lake kayaking or trail walks. This trip, we opted for adventure! We decided to go all in and since the kids are of the age to TRULY appreciate it, we took advantage!  We hiked 6 miles at a high elevation, horse-back rode across stunning terrain, opted for water rapid at a Stage 3 river rafting adventure and got the adrenaline pumping by zip lining among the treetops. There’s something for every energy level and age! Unlike beach lounging, many mountain activities naturally align with mindfulness and awe.

  1. No Sticky Sand or Sunburns

Instead of swollen resort crowds or packed beaches, imagine a mountain cabin tucked among trees with your own quiet patio retreat and the Milky Way overhead. The mountain vacation experience leans more private, peaceful, and personal. Less hustle and more connection with nature, your people, yourself and God.

  1. Camera is Next Best Thing to Your Own Eyes

Between the wildflowers, wildlife, waterfalls, and golden-hour views, mountain scenery is incredibly photogenic. It’s a visual goldmine—and a chance to bring home more than just beach selfies. When you are surrounded by incredible beauty, snapping photos can help you share with the world a glimpse of the beauty you are seeing with your naked eye.

  1. Soulful Stillness, Not Just Serenity

Subtle, but real. Mountains invite introspection. Here, there’s a kind of reverence that sneaks up on you. In the silence and scale, you realize you are part of something bigger than yourself.

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?” – Psalm 121:1

There’s something undeniably powerful about being surrounded by God’s creation. It’s grounding and perspective-shifting.

  1. You Might Discover a New Favorite Place

I admit I was stuck in a summer beach travel routine. It gets hot outside, and I want my toes in the sand and eyes on the emerald green water. Breaking out of the beach opened up a new perspective; one that loves the quiet, the cool air, the stillness, and the connection I feel to God’s creation on the beach is echoed & deepened in the high country.

Trust me that the mountains will surprise you in the best way!

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12
